My daughters and I have a small mixed flock of 10 hens and a rooster. The rooster is a Light Brahma named StormFly.
The hens are a mixture of Americanas, Polish Crested, Silky, Bantam, a giant Jersey, and a pullet who is a mix of Polish and Brahma.
Some of our ladies are very old, inherited from friends. We've survived one coyote attack here; lost five hens (RIP dear ladies).
We have a large-ish run with some established plants for shade and shelter from the monstrous desert heat - heat that took out one of our hens a week ago.
We love our chickens - they're a source of eggs, but above all they're pets.
