I am so new I haven't got my chickens yet. My husband just finished the coop and is working on the fencing to keep out the critters. I am planning on getting 6 laying hens to start - I even have names picked out. I am a recently retired math teacher and I am enjoying my "free" time. I have three cats, a Great Dane and a Chihuahua. I am very excited about getting my chickens

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. We have a large number of members from Florida including NorthFlChick who is a regular greeter on the this section. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

It's always good to see another Floridian join us! Come say hi on our state thread:

What breed of chickens are you planning on?

Thanks for joining us, nice to have you here!

P.S. I love Great Danes and grew up with a Chi...it would be fun to see a photo of your dogs (if you care to share)!

Hi and great that you have chosen to join us here at BYC. I hope that you enjoy your impending chicken experience!

Not sure what kind yet. Will talk to my "chicken" guy on Saturday. He is a local who was recommended by a close friend from church. She got her chickens through him, and she wanted a special kind. He has a good reputation for having very healthy, happy, productive birds. I feel like an expectant momma, I am so excited.

When I am more comfortable with the layout and how to's of the website I will share some pix.
