My wife and I live in the Philippines and we are new backyard chicken owners! These are our first ever livestock. We started off with a straight run of 12 australorp chicks because the breed seems like a perfect fit for us. They are a week old now but unfortunately we are having issues =/ One died yesterday and two died today, so we are now trying everything we can to prevent any more deaths. The brooder, temperature, ventilation, bedding, food, and water all meet the standards I read online, so I think something else is killing them. We are going to give our remaining 9 some poly vi sol (I read about that on this site) and coccidiosis medicine and hope that will be enough. It's definitely been a rough ride for our first ever chicks, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. It's still sad for the chicks, though. I think if we end up with less than 3 or 4 hens then we may just get some RTL native chickens. Unfortunately the native chickens lay far less eggs and don't have as good of a temperament. I wish our first experience with our own livestock was better, but we are definitely learning a lot more under these circumstances.
