(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm brand new to chickens. We left the city 2 years ago and have been working on cleaning up and fencing our 1/4 acre lot. The plan was veggie garden, fruit trees and hedge this year and chickens next year but now that the whole family is laid off from work due to Covid we decided to take on our chicken project a year early!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
4 baby chicks, still under 1 week old.

(3) What breeds do you have?
2 Blue Copper Marans and 2 Icelandic. Hoping for more pullets then cockerals (not allowed roosters in city limits). I'm also interested in Black Copper Marans, Americauna and especially Cream Legbar.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
So far, watching my toddler interact with them has been both the most stressful and most joyful part of my 2 days of chicken ownership. She's hardcore obsessed. All that matters is chickens, last thing she thinks of at night and first thing she wants to do in the morning. I'm trying to balance encouraging this obsession with letting the cute puffballs get some rest. Luckily she's a gentle handler and we're very careful to supervise heavily.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Food security, gardening, learning about mushrooms, cooking, hiking, xc biking, reading

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have a 2.5ish year old daughter, 1.5 yr old giant schnauzer. I've been with my partner 10 years and while they have the attention to detail I am the project driver and planner of the family. We take turns picking up work contracts while the other is a SAHD/SAHM.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

Googling info about chickens. I've known about the site for years and have joined now that the jump into chicken ownership has been made. With about 1 day of planning.
