My family moved to the Valley 7 months ago. Slowly getting our little homestead going. Have always wanted chickens, so decided to jump in with both feet. Our house has a small hen house. All we needed to do was build on a run. (Can't have pasture roaming flock due to hawks, eagles, and our resident fox.)
Just received my order from Cackle Hatchery of 12 BO pullets and 2 cockerels. They are now a week old. Only lost one of the boys. All the girls and the other boy seem to be doing fine. I think we are out of the woods as far a chick loss. They are safely tucked away in my husband's "cat safe" office in a metal water trough. All very active and eating/drinking.
Meanwhile, since my babies won't be laying for a while, I have bought 4 1-year old Barred Rocks from a friend. She brought them to me on Sat. from 1.5 hours away. The girls layed 2 eggs on the way here. In the last three days, have gathered 12 more eggs. Hopefully a good sign.... lol
