Hi all.. My wife and I (and 3 kids -- 13,8,4) are pondering raising two hens for egg laying as we tend to eat a lot of store bought eggs. I think my kids would thoroughly enjoy it but have some issues with the city we live in (Torrance).. I have seen at least one other person on these forums that lives here and have sent her a direct note -- perhaps we can find others here to move toward changing the city ordinances.. Anyway, we'll see how this pans out.. We visited the Farm Supply Company in Arroyo Grande (CA) last week while my kids were on spring break which were selling chicks but were out when we got there -- that is what put the bug in my ear again after looking into this a little sometime last year.

For now, I'm just trying to learn the lingo and what to do when caring for chicks, in the off chance we do this..

Hi! Easter Eggers/ Americaunas are a good breed to start with, as they can be quite friendly. Australorps would also be a good laying hen.

Find out what your feed store sells, some stores are restricted. One of our local Feed stores only sells EEs and RIR/Production Red type chicks. Last year they had more of a diversity.

I personally like EE/Ameracunas. But want some Marans, and other Chocolate eggers. (Chocolate eggers are chickens that lay extremely dark brown eggs) But you can read more here and www.feathersite.com. Good luck hunting for your chooks.

Hi and welcome. I got all six of my chicks at Farm Supply in San Luis Obispo County. Three came from Arroyo Grande! We live 40 miles north of AG and I drove at seven in the morning to get the three (BR, BO, and EE) I had ordered. They were sold out at 10:00 a.m. Wishing you the best of luck on your new project!
