Hello from TN.

Thanks for the welcome.

Yeah the two silkies I had in the past where larger than my other bantams but smaller than my other chickens. Im thinking in terms material conservation and the space i have that the best choice is for the 4'x4' coop and a 4'x9' run.

Here is what im thinking of doing.
Forgive the quick sketch.

I changed my design just a little (after looking at some of the coops on here) and have got all the materials I need to build it so hopefully I can post pics of my progress. Is there a thread for that or can I start one for my coop construction project?

You can start a thread in the "Raising Backyard Chickens" forum - 'Coop and run design' section. Click on that forum at the top of the page and go to the proper section. Looking forward to your posting.

Hello,

So my name is Daniel I had 2 black silkies before and they where two of my favorite chickens.
Not sure on the breeds yet but im looking at orpingtons, black australorps, and speckled sussex. Maybe a combination of two.
Welcome to BYC, Daniel! Glad you decided to join our flock. I used to raise Black Silkies, and they were very sweet and cute little chickens. As far as the new breeds you are considering adding, I've had all three breeds (still have BAs and BOs) and they are all very hardy, calm, and gentle breeds. However if egg production is a major consideration, Black Australorps are definitely the best layers of the three breeds. Until it was broken by a White leghorn in 1979, a Black Australorp held the world laying record with 364 eggs in 365 days (still a brown egg record), and while my BAs have never matched that kind of production (and likely never will), I have had a few of them lay over 300 eggs in a year. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. Good luck with your flock.
