Hi all, my name is Bryan I just started looking into keeping chickens and stumbled on this site, unfortunately at this time it appears that they are not legal to keep in my city but my dad has said he would like to start keeping chickens and they are legal in his city so perhaps my hopes will still become a reality in the near future. I grew up all over So Cal my whole life and lead a pretty average life (work, bills, family) currently residing in Upland Ca for a couple years now. I look forward to learning as much as I can on here.

Welcome to BYC!

I am so sorry that you can't keep chickens!! But at least your dad is considering keeping them and you can join in the fun of owning them.

Have you taken a look at our Local Chicken Laws and How To Change Them section here on BYC? You might want to do some reading here and possibly try to get the laws changed in your area...

Good luck with your future chickens and I hope you can get those laws passed in your area sometime soon.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Hope you are able to get the ordinances changed in your city so you are able to have chickens yourself. TwoCrows gave you the link to get you started. You might also like to check out your state thread for people in your area that might help https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread At least for now you can enjoy your dads chickens!

Well how big of a yard do you have and do you have fences remember
having chickens is not like having a dog as a flock (3) or more is a flock
and one or two is a pet in some sub parts of the lay and if you only have
hens then you get rid of the noise that seems to bother some people
so see if your city laws allow pet chickens one or two hens and also
you can always keep them in a cage

Laws weren't made to be broken but some times you can find out
where the line is and put your toes on it besides it is when you
steep over the line .......

Also you can always raise chicks as a science project if you do not
have 50 of them ...

It always get's me people have dog's that bark all day and night and
then a rooster only crow's for a couple of secants .

Enjoy your poultry ventures

Thanks for the replies, I have a 7000 sqft lot minus the house and garage with the back yard and side yard fenced in, I do have 2 dogs that stay in the back yard. If I was able to keep them in the future I would probably have them on the side of the house which is fenced seperatly from the back which I would guess is about 600sqft.
