It happens, hard as it is. I think all of us fear this, as I drive away for work every morning and they are out, but they are happier, healthier for free ranging. Is your pen covered? Might be wise to leave them tucked in for a while. Don't beat yourself up, you don't usually no there is a problem . . . Until you have one. Welcome!
