Hi everyone! My name is Shannon, I am a Florida native but three weeks ago decided to trade in the beach for country life in the Blue Ridge foothills! I am absolutely loving it. I have 22 acres with a little cottage, and what do you know... it also came with a barn and a rather adequate chicken run as part of it! It was QUITE overgrown and has been a nice project for me for the past week and a half. Not only did I eradicate the weeds, but I covered the top and sides with chicken wire as the top was completely open and the side fencing has spacing that is too large for comfort. As of today I am a proud duck mom! A couple decided they did not have the adequate space for a pair of four month old Pekin ducks, so now they are at the homestead settling in at their own pace. I am so excited and happy! I love their sounds and how curious they are. They have clearly been well cared for and are very friendly. Anywho am looking forward to learning all I can to be the best I can from the forums!

Hello Shannon,
:welcome

Don't you just absolutely love lil orange and white quackers!?! I myself have four. Just so goofy and clumsy it's wonderful. Any plans for future expansion yet? Or a little too early to tell?

Lol! Well I am admittedly new to poultry, but I've been raised hunting, fishing, and horses are my main passion. So I'm not exactly a city slicker ;). Oh my goodness they are SO adorable, and yes clumsy LOL! I was patching some little things in their pen today and they'd both get a few feet away and just watch me as if they were wondering "what the hell is she doing?"

I may get more in the future but right now I am happy with these two!

Thank you everyone for the warm welcomes! I am happy to be here. Rowan, I do miss the saltwater but that's about it. I love where I'm at and it immediately felt like home to me.

I miss the soothing sound of thunder from Florida. Yes that might be strange, but the deep rolling thunder that rolls on and on that you get in Florida is not what you get here. Here it reminds me of canned thunder, still thunder but short and hollow sounding. I also miss the Florida beaches, especially the gulf coast beaches. I have been to the beach here only twice since I moved here, neither time was I impressed.

I DON'T miss the tourist or the traffic!!! Nor the high humidity nearly year round. OH, I certainly don't miss the LOVEBUGS!!!!!!
