I've been raising chickens for about 5 years now and am still learning new things.
My husband and I built our own chicken coop with an attached run. Our neighbors and friends calls it the, "Chicken Taj Mahal". We have expanded the run area when we added to our flock. I'll see if I can get a photo up for you later on. I now have 18 chickens. They have 3/4 of an acre to scratch around on, so they seem happy. I started out with 12...3 Rhode Island Reds, 3 Australorps, 3 Golden Buffs (Red Stars), 3 Barred Plymouth Rocks. About 1 year later, we adopted 2 Easter Eggers from our neighbor. We loved the Easter Eggers so much, 3 years later we bought 12 more. So, I started off with 12 (2012), adopted 2 (2013). Between 2013-2016, we have lost 5 chickens due to illness and 1 by an owl. In 2016, we added 12 more. One just happened to be a rooster. We couldn't keep him, too many problems. Early 2017, we lost another one due to illness. So far, I've had pretty good luck with keeping my chickens alive and well compared to my other neighbors and friends around my area. (12+2=14-6=8+12=20-1=19-1=18).
Before getting the chickens, I did a lot of research and bought a book, "Raising Chickens for Dummies." I used it religiously when I had a question or problem. It's very useful and full of information. I think it might help anyone that has chickens.
I joined Back Yard Chickens to learn more about raising chickens and possibly help someone else out with a problem or question.
