My name is Heather and I am a brand new chick(en) owner! Backyard chickenry(?) has become popular where I live and I thought it sounded like a fun idea! I live in a suburban neighborhood with a very large backyard. The idea appealed to me for 4 reasons: eggs (of course!), compost from chicken poop for my garden, "recycling/using" our kitchen table scraps without wasting it, FUN for me and my 2 kids (5 and 8yrs old).
One week ago I purchased 4 chicks from a neighboring ranch, two 3-day old buff orps and two 3-week old plymouth rock. Sex unknown so it will be an interesting reveal....
We love spending time in our backyard: gardening, swimming, trampoline, firepit, grilling, play, so we'd be able to supervise our chickens when they get to free roam. I don't feel comfortable letting them free roam unsupervised because we have many predators in my area: raccoons, skunks, hawks, weasel, snakes, and feral cats. I plan on building a chicken coop and run from the myriad piles of junk we've accumulated - an old crib, pallets, leftover lumber, porch railing, large wire dog kennels, various pieces of wood, etc. I also plan on modifying the trampoline to be a chicken tractor when not in use. Backyard chickens sounds like a great project for repurposing and reusing unused stuff!
We have 2 domestic cats and a pit bull/dalmation mix dog, as well as a freshwater aquarium (I sort-of like animals
I am at my max limit for indoor pets according to my city ordinances so I am now moving on to filling my backyard quota LOL. No roosters allowed unfortunately.
BYC community has taught me EVERYTHING I've needed to learn about caring for chickens. I don't think I could do it without this site, so thank you!!!
