Hello from VA- we had 4 hens..turns out they are 3 hens & a roo

Thanks for the welcome....I neglected to say anything about myself in my intro in my excitement to post...I am in N. VA just outside of Washington DC. Live on 5 acres, with my husband and two daughters. Their piano teacher has chickens and always gives us eggs, so we decided to try it ourselves. Have a nice converted doghouse and run, heated for the past few weeks. I think they have pretty nice digs. Got the chickens in late Sept at about 3 months old, but still no eggs. We also raise standard poodles. Hope to have my next litter in Feb. Dianne

Be patient you're not the only one waiting for that first egg. From what I understand, it's all about how long the days are. We will all be in lots of eggs in spring. I hope. Good luck with your issues. You are in the right place for answers. There are lots of expierienced chicken people here.
 
I have a BO that just started laying today -- 8 months old! Some birds just take their time.

That's not a RIR either. Sexing a hybrid can be difficult, so it's possible they didn't know the gender of that bird. I bought 4 Welsummers over the summer and got one hen. I ended up giving one roo away and kept the other two for my hens. The annoyance of crowing is overrated and overstated. Most homes are almost soundproof ...

...and I am in Virginia too!

from S. Florida! glad you joined us! The beak issue, it sounds to me like "cross beak". I've had a hen with it. Her's wasn't that severe as to hinder her eating, and she would lay great eggs too. Keep an eye one her. You'll find tons of info that you will need along the way. For the important part, enjoy!!
