I had a hen that was cranky. As long as she isnt hurting the others you can leave her with them. She may just be the dominant hen. If she's hurting them by all means take her out. Dumplins is a good alternative. She'd be too tough to fry.

Thank you all again for your warm welcomes:)

emvickrey:she is our dominant hen and so cranky, yesterday I have never seen her act so mean, she even 'growled' at me, I guess that is what she was doing, it got really ugly at 'roost' time when she figured out how to get to the pullets.
She is also our daily layer too, so I don't know, I put her in her own place and well keep her confined until we can solve the problem or what my husband said 'bbq chicken is mighty fine'

I don't like the pecking order but it happens in all flocks and it does look/sound awful but she had a hold of the pullets by their tail feathers and was pulling them out of their 'roosting' spots 'yikes!' she was making the most horrible hissing and growling sound, took me awhile to get her away from the pullets. Poor pullets were all terrified, I scooped them up and put them with the other comet who tried to tuck them under her wings while balancing the little wild banty mix on her back<---that was a sight to see made me giggle, we call her Honey B, she has a bad leg and hobbles around the yard; the mamma of the group and to see her trying to stuff these pullets half her size under her wings and the banty mix we call Lil Louise just sits on her back fussing away. Last night was a 3 ring chicken circus!

Welcome to BYC! You have come to the coolest place on the internet for chicken knowledge.

I started with chickens last summer and the people of BYC have been great. This year I have tried hatching and buying chicks for even more chickeny joy. Please visit my BYC Page for my blog links that you may find informative or amusing.

Chicken.Lytle: I enjoyed your blog links, oh the snake in the nest box, yikes!

When I was little I lived on a 'farm' out in the country and it was always my job to collect eggs with my big sister, one morning I didn't look I just stuck my hand in the nest box and I felt something strange I jumped back and peeked in only to see an upset skunk looking back at me, I was horrified, my older sister told me to stand real still while she got Dad, the skunk didn't spray me but it sure sprayed Dad, we got a kick out of mom making him take gallons of tomato juice with him to bathroom to take a bath.

so far we have had no problems with any predators, we had a hawk in the yard but he was after the sparrows and the cats that come into the yard have no interest in the chickens and we do have snakes but never seen one around the chicken house, yet
