We have decided to keep Henny and rehome Penny. We will add another 3 hens to our flock and keep fingers crossed that Henny will look after them all and continue to be a happy cockerel.

Welcome, I really enjoyed your introduction and tales of Henny & Penny. They sound like real characters. Hope you will be able to keep them both since you are so attached to them. Go glad you joined the BYC flock.

Just wanted to say hello and your birds are indeed beautiful! I agree with others who have said that each flock and each bird is different. I have some roosters who are very easy going and get along with everyone. For me and my flock, these are the ones who stick around. I have a few older, wiser hens who usually put the young roos in their places and I don't have to worry much because, let's face it, it's the ladies who are running the show!

I have to ask you...are there a lot of corgis in Wales? I have a Welsh corgi, and I dream of taking her on vacation there! I would love to visit one day. The best dogs and ponies come from Wales!

Hello, sorry for the delay in replying .. unfortunately i had to say goodbye to my roos on the weekend. My neighbours ( even though im in the country ) weren't enjoying them crow. We have a new hen that we named Ingrid .. we will keep our flock small i think until i can buy my own place .. then i shall expand.

I don't see many corgis actually .. around where i live the most popular are the Boarder collie i myself have an Alaskan Malamute called Nanook. If you can bring your corgi here you definately should. Awesome places for long or short walks around this way. It's lovely to know your a Welsh fan from across the pond. Hope your having a wonderful Monday

Hi all , so i now have 2 suffork hens and they are both laying about 2 eggs a day. Awesome stuff but just wondering if they will continue to lay all year or do they take a break in the winter? Also, we have always fed our birds on Layers pellets and we cook them pasta and rice plus they have some of our scraps. Our new hen 'Ingrid' isn't too keen yet, but is this a good diet for laying hens?

Congrats on the two new hens
Mine pretty much the same as yours and are doing well. Mine have layers pellets available at all times. They have some mixed poultry corn in the mornings on the floor so they can scratch and peck for it. Plus the usual kitchen scraps and fesh veg for entertainment as a treat. Grit or oyster shell available too at all times for them as they want it.

Ingrid may just be settling down if you have only just got her or she is not used to scraps and extras. I had it happen when I got my new blue splash cockerel. He didn't know what was what as he had never had things like it before. But once he settled he soon got the hang of things.

They may slow down in egg production in winter and especially around molt time at the back end. But then again there are no set rules. Mine started laying the begining of winter at exactly 6 months of age and have only got better. This may be different next winter though when they experience their first serious molt they just had some kind of mini molt in autum just gone.

Brill thank you for that, i will buy some poulty corn too and start giving that. I wasn't aware of molting on hens .. so im glad you have told me .. no freaking out now when thst happens haha.
