Hey - glad to be here. I have a flock of twelve (11 hens and a rooster). I started out with 6 each straight run Buff Orpingtons and Barnevelders. Ended up with 4 Buff Orp hens and two cockerels - the boys were mean and terrorized everyone, so they had to go. We ended up with 5 Barnevelder hens and one cockerel - he is our rooster. That was 7 years ago. I still have 12 birds but only 6 from the original flock and 6 that we've let a broody hatch out here and there (3, 4 and 5 yrs old). These are backyard chickens - I love having them and can't imagine life without them. It is true what they say - "chickens are the gateway drug to farming"! We bought property a few years ago and are building a farm. Hoping to get out there fulltime very soon. I will definitely be expanding my flock then.
