    Hey BYC,

What an amazing site! Glad to have joined, have been reading all these great threads for a few weeks now. I created this account on behalf of my architecture course at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. The course, which is comprised of 10 third/fourth year architecture majors, is a research-design-build studio. This semester we've been commissioned by a local farm to design and build a chicken coop. Sounds fun, huh? Of course there are myriad questions and concerns we've already considered before we reach the design stage and this forum has already proved helpful. Should I search the forum for relavent topics before posting my own questions (ie. whether solar power is worth it, best insulating materials etc.) or should I post a thread and have users higher up in the pecking order (pun intended) guide me in the right direction? I ask because I'm a member of several other online forums and because of search functions vary highly in quality, as do forum's strictness regarding new users. This place seems pretty friendly though! Hope to be discussing chickens with you all soon! If people are interested in our progress I'll keep you posted on our design!

    Thanks,

    drlopez

Greetings from Kansas, Dr. Lopez, and [IMG]! Happy you and your class joined our community! What a great idea - having your class design and build a coop. Putting myself in your place I would go to the appropriate forum (coops in this case), create a thread which tell details the project, and then post your questions. While there really is no pecking order on BYC - I do think being explicit in your description will provide more responses. This way perhaps you won't be treated as much like a "newbe." Good luck you and your class and I hope the experience is fruitful!

Welcome to BYC - great advice from redsoxs. This is a relatively easy going forum. Observe good rules of social propriety and just about anything here is acceptable. Glad that you and your students have come on board. Pun intended. [IMG]

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan :D

It may be well worth your time to browse older threads as well, some have information that may not be in all posts, or brought up in newer ones.
