Hello :frow and Welcome to BYC! Hendersons chicken breed chart compares a lot of the common breeds so far as egg laying ability, weather etc. http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chooks.html#j Silkies and Polish are great pets, the red sex links or white leghorns are favorites if looking for straight egg laying ability. I personally also like Blue Laced Red Wyandottes and Speckled Sussex, they're not the best layers but they sure are pretty.
 
just wanted to say thanks again to everyone for the great advice. I ended up with a pair of red sex links and a buff brahma. I couldn't be happier! have had them a week, and no big problems. they are so fun to just hang out with - i totally understand 'chicken tv' now. thanks so much BYC for all the great help!
 
You will have plenty of eggs!:) my husband, son, grandmother and I love sitting outside watching chicken TV too lol:)
 
chicken tv is the best! even my not-so-enthusiastic-about-chickens hubby has selected a new favorite seat in the house, so he has a clear view of what the girls are doing outside! :)
