Hi!
I'm not quite a chicken owner yet, but I'm planning to get them this coming spring. My husband and I have been working on turning our 8.5 acres into a self-sufficient farm for the last three years. So far it's just a really big vegetable garden and some pasture.
I have some farming in my family history, but not for at least a generation, so all my info is coming from reading and a very little from my grandmother, who had chickens as a child.
My plan is to have 25 chickens: an assortment of heavy breeds and a few boys for eating. I'm not sure yet whether I want to include a rooster in with the chickens or not, since I've read they help to keep the flock cohesive, but also that they're a pain, and that there's the problem of fertilized eggs that people wouldn't want to eat.
I don't have a lot of local contacts yet, since we aren't very involved in the community and work 30 miles away, so I thought this might be a good way to learn and exchange information.
I'm really excited about getting chickens, and heading into deeper farming waters!
