I'm new to raising chickens (heck, I'm new to ownership of ANY animal!) and have lurked at BYC for months. This site been invaulable for helping me get through the early months (I just got my first baby chicks in May). I found the site through google and love reading through the message boards.

Now that I'm a member, I especially look forward to being able to search by member posts. A woman who posts under the name "Ruth" was (unbeknownst to her) especially helpful to me at one point. I'd like to find more of her posts.

I have four pullets - (the most we're allowed in Madison, Wisconsin) - two RIRs and two BRs.

Chickens are part of my larger project of attaining a degree of self-sufficiency in food production. So far, the girls have done a GREAT job of providing manure for the garden and scarfing down Japanese beetles. I'm looking forward to their first eggs in September.

Hello, FordMommy – I’m fortunate to live in chicken-friendly Madison. I don’t know where Waupaca is. I’m relatively new to Wisconsin.

EaganChickens – ICAM!!! Did you know that WI Dept of Homeland Security already requires NAIS registration. I was so ticked!

The MadCity Chicken Coop Tour is a great event for both the curious and the serious to learn more about backyard chickens. This is a self-guided tour of coops throughout Madison and the surrounding areas.

Touring will be from Noon-4pm, and the documentary Mad City Chickens will be shown at dusk.

End your coop-touring day by enjoying a free screening of Mad City Chickens as it was meant to be seen - in a backyard with chickens!

Bring your chairs on the evening of August 15 and see a FREE screening of the film Mad City Chickens.
- The film will be shown in the backyard of Lucinda's Saloon (a coop at 1937 Vahlen Street)
- The film's creative team (Tashai Lovington and Robert Lughai) will be present to talk about the movie
- Popcorn provided; bring your own beverages (adult beverages are fine)
- Doors open at 7:30 p.m.; movie starts at sundown. The movie will be canceled in the event of rain.

Hello from Middleton....I work in Madison. I have 5 girls....thought about getting 4 like Madison's ordinance allows. But when I went to New Glarus to pick up the chickens I couldn't help myself....We don't have specifics about the number of chickens allowed here just no roosters. Had to call city hall to ask about rules. Another family nearby did the same, they stuck with 4. I am awaiting the first eggs too! The girls are funny and sweet, good about eating bugs and some weeds, have discovered the blueberries though. Also fond of the beans but only the leaves.
