I'm discovering that layer feed isn't really all that special. I now prefer to feed Purina Flock Raiser because it's great for mixed ages and genders and even other poultry. I buy the smallest bag of chick starter then switch them over when it's gone. It makes integrating so much easier, especially when chicks get mixed in at around 4-5 weeks old. I also like the higher protein content for when molting season rolls around, for that extra boost to help regrow feathers and get through winter. Haven't found a need to ever go back to layer. I've always offered free choice oyster shell, they just eat a bit more now.
