Hello everyone! My Anne's Sarah. My husband recently started JOA Farms. Chickens, eggs and horses for now. Goats later. Anyhow, every time I googled anything about a chicken, this site came up so figured I should join.
I've always been around chickens but mostly just kept some RIR and barred rocks around for eggs. Bought some of each of those along with some golden comets and araucanas this spring. Then I started learning off all these other breeds so now when I see a breed for sale that I don't have, I buy it. Went from 6 chicks to about 70 chicks and adults. Most are young yet but have a few layers. No breeding yet but I did pick up some lavender and cuckoo Ameraucanas recently and am very excited about them! Still babies right now. 4 lavenders and 3 cuckoos. Also have some pretty neat mostly white araucanas that I'm excited about.
Also got a pretty neat polish rooster. One lonely silkie so I'll need a few more of those. Got a pair of French black copper marans. Still working on getting some Wyandottes as well

Greetings from Kansas...not sure if your name is Anne or Sarah, but

! Great to have you with us! Good luck to you and your farm!!

Thanks for the welcome guys! I'll add some picture of all my cheepers when I get home this evening.
Do have a quick question though, for coops being used for nighttime security only, how much space per bird? Or how big of a coop for roughly 70 birds? They're all free to roam where ever during the day but nighttime predators ended up with about 6 over a weekend when we tried to leave them free at night. Never had an issue with the game birds getting eaten, didn't think about the poor hens who wanted to sit in an open coop at night :(

We've got a deposit on a Great Pyrenees pup that should solve most all our predator issues once he's old enough :)

Welcome to BYC!!!

Today I finally went in the babies coop and got an actual count. Now that I have, I think it was my cochin crosses that were killed by the possum but I had 2 light grey chicks with feathers on their feet and now I don't have any :(

We have 68 total right now. Here are a few pics

Here's one of my new lavenders

Was told this one is a RIR/Barred Rock cross. I'm not sure if she is, but she's really neat
