Keep an eye out for predators, even during the day--neighborhood/stray dogs can do you in if you don't have a fenced area for your flock to range.
You'll have great fun with them. We have kids so it was real important to pick suitable hens.
Overall I would have to say our Buff Orpington has been wonderfull, Our Like Sussex has been great too, a bit more cheeky.
Our Copper Maran real gentle but not as much fun. We had a wonderfull "Gentle Giant" Golden (Dark) Brahma that would be good also.
We've never had Silkies, but everyone say's there great with kids.
