Well, hmm.. Hello.

1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
No not exactly. Raised some a long time ago.. Just got some more back in Aug. Which brings me here with a few questions.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 28.. I know I have at least 1 rooster, maybe 4. Won't be sure until they start laying. Which I'm not sure about since apparently some of them decided to take up a weird eating habit, when they have plenty to eat all the time.
Little weirdos.. ;-)

(3) What breeds do you have? Mixed flock. Some barred, some sex links or something, I think, not quite sure. Gold, reds, black with some gold or brownish color around their necks. The tsc kinds..

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Been stalking the site for a while now and just decided to join because of my weirdo babys, umm, eating habit.. And stuff.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Variety of stuff..

(6) What other animals do you have? 2 cats and 1 puppy. Planning on getting other animals eventually..

OK, now, as to a question.. The weird eating habit.. OK. Window screen.. ?
What is up with chickens eating window screening? Not enough fiber in their diet or something? They have plenty of water, crumbles, grains, oyster shell, grit, straw, hay, etc..
Little weirdos.. Its the first time I've ever seen chickens eat screen before.
Anyways, any ideas?
Where would I put a question like that on here? Other than that odd behavior, they seem to be normal.

Hi and welcome to BYC and back to the world of chicken-keeping. Any birds that you are unsure of, gender-wise, you can post pics here -

Not sure about the strange choice in "food". Maybe just keep with proprietary feed and cut out any additional foods. Sometimes additional foods can inhibit the nutrient uptake present in proprietary feeds. Maybe its worth a try - no effort required. You could post your question here - Feeding & Watering Your Flock

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224

I guess their making a jail break by eating the window screen.:lau but seriously, are they eating bugs off the screen and it appears their eating the screen? anyway, Im sure someone here will be able to answer that question.:yuckyuck

Hello, and welcome to BYC!
If your chickens are eating window screen i would remove it or cover with hardware cloth so they can't get at it.
Apparently they also love styrofoam insulation, so no telling why they do stuff like that. Give them things to peck like apples, pumpkin or whatever to give them something better to do.
Enjoy your time here, lots of interesting articles and fun threads.
You might want to check out the thread for your state, i think it is under Where are you? Where am i or something like that. Again, welcome!

Hello! So glad you decided to join us. As to your question, we need a few more details. Is this screen that is in pieces in the dirt? Is it part of their enclosure? Is it old screen that comes apart easily, when they peck, or scratch at it?
