I have had my chickens for about a month now. They were given to me by my sister-in-law. She had a large flock and needed to thin the #s out a little since she is currently taking chemo she doesn't have strength or time to take care of them much.
So, we have a total of five chickens. Sally Mae (Wyandotte)(the leader), Cleo Sparkles (Sussex)(the mother hen aka bossy), Ginger Spice (Rhode Island Red)(the escape artist), Cinnamon Spice (Orpington)(very prissy and sassy, does not like to get dirty), and Doughnut (my daughter's Silkie)(so calm and derpy).
Their names definitely reflect their personalities except Doughnut she is so sweet and gentle. We do not know why our daughter named her that. She states it's because she looks like she has a doughnut on her head.

My favorite part of raising the chickens so far is because the are a lot of fun. I go out to the garden and chit-chat with them. My daughter loves to take care of them. Also the benefit is the eggs as well. Our family enjoys that. It's an Easter Egg Hunt every day LOL.

I have some other hobbies I love to enjoy as well. I love to garden. We have six 25 foot rows of raised gardens. We live on a hill so we have to terrace the garden beds. I love growing all kinds of plants.
I love crocheting. I have been crocheting most of my life and I spend a lot of time making things to sell at the local farmers market.
I also love to teach. I was an assistant teacher, part time for a while until my youngest was born then my husband and I decided it would be neat to just step back and homeschool her. The chickens also give a great science study to use.

I am married and we have a blended family. Five children in total. Only the youngest is at home now. I used to be an office assistant and a part time assistant teacher for special needs. Now I am a work from home stay at home mom. I have one cat and five chickens.

I found BYC by search on google, also saw on facebook, but most of the advice for caring for chickens showed up in my searches for google. I found it was free to join and here I am. Thank you for allowing me to join this community. The small amount of information I have received just by reading posts have helped so tremendiously. Thank you so very much from my family to yours.

Welcome to BYC. I'm sorry about your sister-in-law's illness. I wish her the very best! It was so good of you to take the hens, I'm sure it relieved some of her stress.
