My advice would be to hang out on BYC and read, read, read! There is SO much information on this forum, and everyone here is very helpful. There are so many choices to make before you actually get chickens.
What will be the purpose of your flock? Eggs? Meat? Both? or pets with benefits? That will help you decide what breed(s) you would like to start out with.
What kind of space do you have available to keep them safe? Will you be using an existing building, or creating something from scratch. What is your coop budget? You can get LOTS of building materials for free if you look around where you live, go to craigslist, ask around.
Is there a poultry vet in your area? If not, educate yourself on basic first aid and plan to have a medical kit. Vaccinate your chicks. Locate where you will be buying your feed from and talk to the people who work there about "deals". Also, find someone who lives near you to take care of them if you ever need to go away (vacation, emergency etc).
Starting out and getting set up was the most work, but I have to tell you.... it is TOTALLY worth every penny and every bit of effort I put out there. Chickens are amazing creatures. I wish I had begun years ago!

My best advice would be to research and read all that you can before starting your flock.
I researched chicken and chicken care for about a year before I ordered my first chicks.
They are now 5 months old and I love them more each day.
Having a year of research behind me did make starting more successful than doing it
on a whim because I had a basic knowledge base on how to raise them. Till now I have
manly had cats and fish so chickens were new territory for me.
Take your time, learn all that you can, ask questions then when you are ready dive in and
enjoy the ride. Chickens are great they will teach you things and you wonder how you
ever got along without them.
