HI everyone,
We got ourselves 5 hens. They are about 6 weeks old. Right now they are in at night time, and out in a small temporary run during the day. We just ordered a snaplock coop. I was hesitant to buy or build a wood coop, because lets face it, if this doesnt work out for us, I think it would be easier to hose down and clean a plastic coop than a wood one and sell. We are now looking at run options. Our chickens will need to be in a run since we live in the suburbs. We have a decent sized yard however, we also have a nice abundance of wildlife. So keeping the chickens safe and contained is super important.

We are trying to figure out the best way to build a run. We originally wanted a mobile run we can move around every few days to avoid stink. But the more I look into it, the harder it seems. My husband is only somewhat handy and I am not handy at all. If we decide to keep the chickens in a stay put run, how much space would 5 hens need? Also how would I avoid the smell? I have neighbors I don't want to offend and I really want this to be a positive experience. These chickens are our pets now! :) Thanks in advance

The usual space requirements are 4 sq.feet per bird in the coop and 10 sq.feet per bird in the outdoor run. If you check out the coops section you will find a variety of styles for different budgets. Craig's list in your area may have coops and or runs available.
