Hi! I just wanted to introduce myself. I've been lurking on this site off and on for about a year and a half now, and I've finally decided to take the plunge and join.

I've read several books on poultry husbandry & I've finally convinced my husband that I am SERIOUS about raising a few chickens. It took several years to convince him to let me have a pair of hens, but we are getting ready to start building a coop as soon as tractor pulling season ends! I am so excited!!!

My husband grew up on a farm and from the age of 5 till 14, he was the sole caretaker of anywhere from 200-350 chickens. To this day (25 years later) he still refuses to eat chicken! So when I brought up the subject a couple years ago, he was less than enthusiastic!!!

I think we have decided on starting with a pair of barred plymouth rock hens and see how that goes.

We have two little girls ages 5 and 3 who are very excited! They have kindly offered up their outdoor playhouse for the chickens when we were having a family discussion of coop design. They can be so sweet!

from Vermont!

I think your DH will find that having a few backyard chickens is quite different from raising hundreds! I started out with 8 chicks and wasn't sure if I would like them. I am still amazed at how much I love them! They really are fabulous pets, and now I have 5 times as many chickens as I started with plus ducks and turkeys

Thanks for the kind welcome!

One Acre Wonder Farm: I have always been so envious of all the experiences my hubbie had growing up on the farm, and he HATED it! Not fair!!!

Howdy from a neighbor in Arkansas and welcome to this amazing hobby and board! I have a few Barred Rocks myself and they are wonderful birds!
