Hello I'm a new member

Hello,
I live in mid Wales Uk which is very beautiful (....and very wet!) with my youngest son (older son is in US working at summer camp - exciting) and a rescue mutt.
we've had chickens for about a year and when one went broody recently we scrounged six fertile eggs and put them under her. It's now day 21 and I'm waiting to see if they hatch. I managed to have a look this morning when she had her daily break from sitting and there was no sign of activity - I'll just have to be patient I suppose! I've been avidly reading all the excellent advice on BYC which has helped me to decide to let nature take its course - thanks

Good luck with your broody Very Exciting. I just finished a 21 day stretch with one of my girls but the end result wasnt what we hoped for. Not the broody's fault I believe it was the eggs we used from a neighbor But It was a great learning process and next brood I will be even better prepared

Thanks, I'm trying not to get too excited as the eggs should be fertile but we're not certain. It is a good learning experience as you say, and I've made a nursery coop so I'll be prepared next time if this doesn't go to plan.

Thanks folks, I was beginning to worry but have realised its not very warm here at the moment & despite setting up another nesting box our other hen is laying next to the broody, who swiftly grabs the eggs so she's sitting on about 12 which doesn't help I'm sure! Being a newbie I didn't mark the eggs, but think I can tell the ones we put under her as they're much smoother (from being turned & sat on longer I suppose) and a lighter colour. I might take the ones I'm confident aren't fertile and do the water test in a couple of days if the hatching hasn't started...I'll know better next time!
