Hello, everyone!
My husband grew up with chickens (still had two when we started dating 30 years ago) and I've always thought they were neat. We finally decided to get a couple for our backyard. During the 3 day weekend, last weekend, we tore down our old Bunny hutch and enclosure and built a new chicken coop and run. It just needs some finishing touches....a door to the run and to secure the wire at ground level and few other places. Then we just need to purchase some supplies and CHICKENS!!! My husband just wants to start out with two and we're looking at getting a Barred Plymouth Rock and maybe a Rhode Island Red, probably pullets. Any recommendations or suggestions appreciated! Here are photos of our coop and partially done run:

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Love the colour of your coop!! I started my chicken adventures with red sex link hens and they were great egg layers. Friendly too and loved weeding the garden for me. Have you checked out the breed section? Lots of reviews on breeds and their pros and cons. Here is the link ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds

Wishing you the very best of luck with your chicken journey. Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Well if you want a more docile bird then I generally find the larger breeds to fit that category (Orpington, Brahma, jersey giant, etc...) they do tend to get broody more so maybe not the best for egg production tho. Medium sized bird tend to lay a little more imo. So it's really up to you

.

P.S. Your coop looks fantastic!!!!

The only think I would suggest, is replacing the chicken wire at the top of your coop , with 1/2 " hardware cloth - any predator can chew or tear through chicken wire/ We all say 'chicken wire only keep chickens IN, it does nothing to keep predators out.' Same with flimsy chicken wire in run. Your birds will thank you it you at least back it with 1/2" hardware cloth from ground to about 18-24" in height - and securely attached(not with wire ties) to the framing. Do you have a wire apron around the perimeter of the run to discourage diggers.
