I have chickens. Currently three silkies and three RIR hybrids. The latter are older and seem to do their own thing. Got all six straight run and I'm not really in it with food production as a primary goal. I'm kind of using them as a learning opportunity and I currently plan to not regulate the male/female population. I figure if having a bunch of roosters around turns out to be a bad idea I can just have a chicken taco month. Also I have the older one's free range and take the silkies out from practice rangings. They love eating ants which is good because ants are everywhere.

So that's my introduction can I be one of the cool kids now?

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Too many roosters will cause lots of fighting and harm to the hens. The correct ratio of rooster to hen is 1 rooster for every 10 hens. So plan on lots of chicken BBQ's!

Enjoy your flock and welcome to ours!

you're in - welcome to Backyard Chickens. Silkies are very difficult to sex before 4-5 mos. of age and sometimes not till they crow or lay a egg.
