Hey, I saw your pic on the other thread. You have a Service Beagle?? He/she is a beauty.

I have a Beagle too and boy I don't know what to do with that crazy dog of mine. She just turned 1 and is an absolute terror. Any Beagle advice would be most appreciated.

As for beagle advice , Not to sure as I have never really been a dog person till now. I always joked with my husband that if I could get a cat to help me I would lol. I went with a beagle for size and easy grooming since I am home alone so much. I was told by many people what a joke it was thinking I could ever get a Beagle to do service work. Now I think back and I giggle at how wrong those people were. Milo is now 8 months 3 weeks old. He's been in training since 10 weeks old. I only take him once a week for a hour. Then I work with him when I am able. Some days I can somedays I can't. Since I am home all the time he is contstantly with me, I am sure that helps because he never gets a chance to misbehave to much. He is just like a normal dog, plays with my kids plays with his playmate that we adopted from a pound for him to play with because it is so important he is allowed to be a dog.

I did get him a little kids play pool , filled it with dirt and hid dog treats in it. This way he gets to dig and it is his digging spot. One thing I have noticed is Beagles LOVE to use their paws. So teaching him to do things with his paws was easy. Getting him to learn to pick up keys was a bit harder I think because the feel in his mouth.
Another Beagle issue is chewing so I have two doggy toy boxes. He knows those are his, and now he knows to pretty much only take from his toy baskets. Although I still have to tell him no when he wants one of my daughters Webkinz.
I've not had any issues with him and the chickens, he seems to want to guard them when he is outside which isn't often.
I started him young and would actually work him with his sit and lay stay in the coop with the chickens running around him. Also as a service dog the " leave it " command was one of the first few things he learned. That way he knows he isn't allowed to touch whatever it is I am telling him to leave. I can drop food around him and he leaves it which is huge for a beagle because they love food !
Best thing you can do with any dog is basic training classes. That allows you to address some issues that might be breed specific. Milo's biggest issue has been keeping his nose off the ground. His trainer always jokes his nose gets him into trouble

We fixed that by using a gentle leader whenever he puts his nose to the ground.
