I'm doing research first, before I get sucked into the cuteness of baby chicks and bring them home before we are prepared.

So a little background

My sister, DH and our 5 month old son are moving into the original farm house for our city block the begining of July!
138 year old house which we absolutely love.

We are talking about adding chickens to our already full household (4 cats, 2 snakes, 4 gerbils, 2 mice, 1 freshwater fish-tank) for obvious reasons (eggs, pest control and compost). We are thinking a small flock, no more than 3 hens and prefer not to have a rooster since they can be noisy.

I have gotten several books from our local library and reading every second I get. I’m very excited about having urban chickens and would love any and all advice on the subject.

I’ve looked through the FAQ forums but may still have questions.

Question 1: Is there a website that offers free coop plans?

Question 2: How do I find a local feed store (Indianapolis, IN)

Question 3: Where do we buy our new additions (we like Rhode Island Red, Barred Rocks, and Buff Orpingtons) (I’ve only seen them online and at 25 chicks minimums)

Thanks
Karolina

1.) If you wander around the coop section here I am sure you could get some idea's and help from anyone who has something you like,

2.) I "googled" the words feed store Indianapolis IN and got 4 locations....

3.) Your local feed store may still have some, & MyPetChicken (one of our sponsors) sells small quantity's....

Welcome to the club.

Feed stores should be listed in the yellow pages, too.

Research is good. I still don't have any chickens (May 21st they arrive) and have been a member here 2.5 months. I do have ducks though.

Hope you find exactly what you're looking for. Your house sounds wonderful! I love old farm houses.

You know you have to post pic. of the farmhouse!
Your local feedstore will have, or be able to order chicks for you. Look thru threads on here to see if someone is near you, and will sell.
Have you seen the coops pictured here? Also, you can look for a seperate thread for chicken coops on BYC.
Have fun. Keep us updated!

welcome to the board, here you will find wonderful sources of information and meet some great people.
