My wife and I retired and bought 15 acres away from Hub and Bub!! I'm 70 years old and I just started in the spring with 7 chicks. I only wanted hens for egg laying. However, I got 4 hens and three roosters. One rooster (Rhode Island Red) is down right mean to people. The second (Gold-Laced Wyandotte) is persnickety. The third (Buff Orpington) is very calm and gentle.
What can I do with a mean rooster?
Oh yeah, there has been a rule in our house since our kids were very little. The rule that became law is this:
If you name it, you can't eat it. My kids made the rule and I made it law so I do not want to go back on my word even though it was made 50 years ago!!!
My Rhode Island Red's name is Ginger Rogers. My three Gold-laced Wyandottes names are Betty Grable, Rita Hayworth and Audrey Hepburn. My three Buff Orpingtons names are Lauren Bacall, Heddy Lamar and Lana Turner. Ginger became George Rogers, Betty became Bob Grable and Lauren became Louis Bacall.
I just don't know what to do with the 2 mean roosters (they are also quite loud).🐔

Welcome to the forum!! We'd love to see pictures of your beauties if you have any handy. I absolutely ADORE their names!

Is rehoming with personality disclosure an option for you, assuming they may still get invited to dinner by a new owner?

If not, I'd consider if multiple coops and flocks is doable (one boy per group, and you'd have to add girls) assuming you are prepared to contain and keep yourself/guests safe from the aggressive boys. I really don't recommend keeping them; big boys can unexpectedly do a LOT of damage. Never underestimate them and their ability to get a sneak attack in.

Well if it's for the betterment of the flock and you not actually eating them, I say you haven't broken the law. Your Buff Orpington boy will be very grateful, you'll be thankful you don't have to watch your back or shins, etc. and the hens will be much less bothered and stressed by the other two boys as well. Wins all around (I almost said winner-winner, chicken dinner, but we've already covered that.😅)

Let us know how it goes! We are here to help in whichever type of decision you would like to proceed with your extra boys as well. Thanks for joining and welcome to BackYard Chickens!
