Hello, I am Rachel, and I just got my first backyard chickens. I had it all planned out, I was going to get 4, I knew what kind of chickens I was going to get, I knew when they would go outside, everything. Well, I gave up on what kind. I figure, this is my first try at it, I just want to try. So I went to the local farm store to let an employee grab me a random assortment out of the "assorted pullets" bin. Turns out you have to get at least 6. So now I have 6 random pullets. Oh, and mother nature decided against spring, so it is going to snow all week. So no getting the chicks acclimated outside with the other animals for a few hours a day.
I grew up working on farms and all my friends were farmers. Still that way except that I am a full time student, so I have a bit of time to try something new like raising chickens for eggs. I am a vegetarian and try my hardest to eat from my backyard, but at least locally when I can. This is getting me one step closer to being self sustained. I am pretty excited about it. Chickens were always my favorite animals on the farm.
Thus far my best guess at what my chicks are are 2 Wyandottes, 2 red Bantams, and 2 white Leghorns. The white chicks are super friendly and HUGE. The 2 little black ones have a bit of an attitude and they are pretty small. The 2 red ones are exactly what I would expect from chickens, normal size, kind of don't really are what is going on, just want to peck about. I cant wait to find out what they all are.
Really happy to be here. Our city requires a class to be taken to get a permit for backyard chickens and the person teaching the class recommended this site. I can see why!
