Hello, a few years ago I raised a small flock in my back yard in Dallas. First time didn't go so well. I got my chicks from an unreliable source, and had 2 of 25 survive ; 3; aside from the one grown hen I also received form the guy, though also was partially my fault from not knowing about keeping the chicks draft free. I let them out free with the other hen in the run with their little coop and a heat lamp inside. The two chicks, who were supposed to be hens turned out to be roo's and i had to re-home them, due to city code. Thus I went to a different guy this time, who let me come to his home and pick out my chicks who all were lively and healthy. This time I kept the chicks inside the house in a tub with a heat lamp. There were 15 of them this time, and he could not guarantee that they were female or male, so I just rolled with it. All the chicks survived but it turned out that all of the barred rocks were roo's, one of the RIR's was a roo. So I was down to three orpingtons and three RIR's. I ended up giving the roo's and the three RIR hens to a cousin and kept my three orpigntons, and the original RIR hen, Hensworth Von Featherbottom the First. Soon I could tell my three orpington hens apart and they were names, Puff, Angel, and Clippydoodle. I got 3 eggs a day if not four. They were wonderful birds. If I came outside they would call to me, and quite often would hop in my lap to sleep. After I went to college my parents re-homed the birds, sadly, so now that I have moved, built a new shelter, I am planning to order chicks, this time from Murray McMurray hatchery. I was wondering if anyone had any pictures of their birds form McMurray? I am quite interested in getting their Araucana, Black Giant, Black Minorca, Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, Cuckoo Mara, Egyptian Fayoumis, Light Brahmas, Salmon Faverolles, and Single Comb Brown Leghorn. But with the way my partner is talking, I might just be purchasing the Rainbow Layer package, and convincing him to let me get three Salmon Faverolle hens, and a Salmon Faverolle roo. Anyone have any advice? =) I am ordering the COVC and VACC with them as well as Quik Chik and Gro-Gel Plus.

Greetings from Kansas and [IMG]! Great to have you with us! I am happy to hear you are giving it another go with chickens. I have used Murray McMurray in the past and have always had great success - in fact, the only bird that ever died in transit was a CornishX - all the egg layer varieties have thrived. I don't have any pics but I am pleased with their birds. Keep in mind that hatchery birds are usually "show quality" but are good layers. I think the gro-gel and Quik Chick is a good idea. Another bit of advice is to call your postal hub (where your mail goes BEFORE it makes it to your post office) - if possible, pick them up there to avoid another day in travel. If you can't do that, have your local P.O. call you so you can drive right down and pick then up and get them settled. I wish you well in your next chicken journey!
