Hello. I hope I'm doing this right. lol
I've been using BYchickens as a resource for several years, but only just registered.
I never thought I'd have chickens, but a friend thought my kids would like them so in 2020 we added 5 to our family. They were 2 buff orpingtons, a polish, the most beautiful and sweet black cochin EVER and a brahma. Sadly, Our cochin got a bacterial infection in the spring of 2022 and died in the night. One of our orpingtons got mites about a year later and we were not very experienced with figuring out chicken ailments and she eventually became paralyzed and couldn't open her mouth to eat. A friend had lost most of her flock the summer before and was afraid her remaining two would freeze over the winter so we added her Easter Egger and a very skittish Favorelle to our ladies. The Egger showed the symptoms the orpington did and we thankfully figured it out and successfully treated her for mites and she's still with us.
Last fall, a hawk found its way into our wooded chicken area and took out our Polish. The same friend who brought us the egger and favorelle (who is still skittish, but not nearly as much!) got a job that would keep her away from home a lot so she brought us her newest ladies: a grayish black cochin, another Polish and an aggressive Olive egger. This morning, the cochin and Polish were both attacked by a fox. The Polish did not survive so.....We now have 6 chickens: One buff orpington ("cc"), one brahma ("miss Jay"), One Easter Egger ("egger"), one favorelle ("Trudy"), an Olive Egger ("Egger 2" lol), and a cochin who will hopefully recover from the same attack that took out the polish ("kiki").
I can't remember what else I was supposed to share so here's some random info:
I have 3 kids born in 2006, 2012 and 2020 (2 girls and a boy). All are ASD1/aspergers which adds some challenges, but mosltly with the youngest. The two eldest are bright, funny and very artistically creative. We also have 3 cats (2 boys and a girl). I love to get my hands in the earth and garden, the joy of seeing things grow and become beautiful or that we can eat matches little else for me...I'm a born and raised New Yorker (manhattan, the bronx and brooklyn) who's transplanted into a 1st tier suburb of the twin cities in MN. I'm kicking myself for not getting solar panels with a battery, last year. lol
Glad to be here!!!
