Hello from the wilds of Eastern Missouri!
I grew up with chickens, but haven't been in a position to have some of my own in my "grown up" life until now!
Our flock... is currently inhabiting a bathtub. There are 7 unknown breed (more about that in a sec), 2 Ameracuana, 2 silver laced Wyandotte, and 2 bantams... of unknown type because I thought bantam was a breed but I know better now, lol!
My 7 Stinkers are the result of a call to action from our local 4-H/extension office. They had too many incubators and eggs and not enough classrooms to hatch them in... enter me. How hard could it be, right?
We got 7 chicks out of the 12 eggs we were given... and then 6 more because we went to Orscheln's to get feed and I was compelled. COMPELLED I say!
The 7 Stinkers are going to go live with my mom's flock next week, but I'm officially stuck on chickens.
So far, what I'm loving about having these little guys is how personable they are and how much they change day to day! Like seriously, HOW'D YOU GROW FEATHERS THAT FAST?! Also the bitty little bantam chicks like to snuggle under the 7 Stinkers and the others like they are hens and it's freaking adorable.
Aside from this new chicken hobby, I am a gardener, a feral housewife, I love cats, reading (I'm literally never without a book or my beloved Kindle), and I'm *trying* to write a novel of my own. I'm a pharmacy technician by trade, but a SAHM right now.
I have 2 sons: J is 7 and H is 3. My husband is a diesel mechanic/shop manager for a bus company and works on 7 zillion cars for friends and family in his spare time. We have 2.5 acres (surrounded by allllllll the woods) about 90 minutes south of Saint Louis. We have 4 cats (Harold, Penny, Ivan, and Monty) and one big doofus of a dog (Hank). My parents live 3 miles up the road and have 216 acres where my dad's friends tease him about being a "gentleman farmer".
I found BYC because I've been desperately googling every possible scrap of information pertaining to these stinky chicks for almost 3 weeks now (Shrink wrapping?! Poopy butt? Dehydrated chick? What the HELL are these Frankenchickens from the extension office?!) and the best answers have come from here! Not to mention that you all seem very cool.
I'm so glad to be here!
