Hello everyone! Thanks so much for having me! I can tell you that I've already learned so much from you guys, before I even joined.
Here's my answers to the intro Qs.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes! Totally new. We rent a cottage on farm land. My daughter has a special interest in eggs, hatching eggs, chicks/chickens and invited herself into the farmer's coop. From there, he loaned us his incubator and provided us with some of his eggs so we (she) could hatch some of her own! So that's how we started. We got our first chickens (hatched chicks) 2 days ago.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 6 chicks. I think there's 4 pullets and 2 cockerels but I'm not as confident about 2 of them yet.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I'm not 100% certain but I think they're Welsummers. Of what variety I'm unsure and not clear if they're purebred or hybrids. The farmer just gave us some eggs! Haha. I think Welsummers after the Google search/Google lens. They've got quite distinct markings.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
TBC! Though I've loved the idea of it for some times. We moved to a rural setting from the city and just love country life.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Art (painting), Kendo, walking, running
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Married, 1 daughter. We have a cornsnake, 2 platy fish, 2 amano shrimp and a feral farm cat that was left behind by the last farmers as a kitten. It lived wild for 2 years and is now in our house, adopted and very domesticated. But a good ratter still. We're in an area where organised releases and shoots happen (of ring-necked pheasants) and a supposedly 'wild' pheasant adopted us also. A cock. He lives in our garden too. Or rather frequents it often between his other business. We are a pheasant cafe!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Erm I found you on Google. Given my complete lack of knowledge, when we were given the opportunity to hatch chicks, I went on an Internet deep dive of research and found you an excellent source of info/knowledge. I joined because I now have 6 chicks and I'm hoping we'll be granted permission to keep some of them and have our own backyard chickens. For now, we are looking after them in our brooder.
