Hello everyone,

My name is Doug and I was born and raised just outside Chicago, IL. I moved out to the Country and live on 2 acres of land. I'm looking for away to make money off my land. Most of my friends in the burbs of Chicago like brown organic fedd free range eggs and are paying a preimum for them like $5 to $6 a dozen. So I'm looking to make my land work for me and make me money. any and all advice would help me a lot thank you all

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join us. If you're going to save much on eggs, you need to get a really efficient laying breed of chickens. White leghorns are the best layers under ideal condtions (good light and warm temperatures). A White Leghorn hen set the world's laying record in 1979 with 371 eggs in 365 days. However, Black and Red Sex Link (sold under a lot of different labels by hatcheries) hens will outlay them in areas with very cold and dark winters. I personally prefer the Black Sex Links over the Reds as my BSLs have been a little friendlier than my RSLs, and have laid slightly better in very cold winters, however both Sex Link varieties are egg laying machines. If you prefer a standard breed (Sex Links are hybrids and will not breed true), Black Australorps are the best layers of the standard brown egg laying breeds. Until it was broken by the White leghorn in 1979, a Black Australorp held the world laying record with 364 eggs in 365 days (still a brown egg laying record), and while my BAs have never reached that kind of production (and likely never will), I have still had a few of them give me over 300 eggs in a year. I have become very utilitarian as the years have passed and most of my flock are excellent layers, but many BYC members will tell you (and I agree) that the primary reason for getting chickens is not to save money on eggs, but just for the joy of raising them. Whatever breeds you end up getting, good luck with your flock.
