Hello we are new to this and need advice. We are looking to get 3 to 4 hens for fun and eggs. We live in a Houston suburb so we need to find a bread that can handle Tx summers. I believe that the coop we need to build should be about 4x8 and a 4x 20 foot run to keep the hens happy. Does this sound about right?
Thank you for any and all input. This is the wife’s long stand wish list item and I am going to build this and surprise her for her birthday.

The best way to find out is to post on the Texas thread and see what people living there have to say.

Go to "where am I, where are you," in the social forum and you can find your state thread there.

That's okay, I figured that is what happened.

Welcome to BYC!

Don't worry about the subject misspelling. Happens to us all!

Definitely stop by your state thread to chat with your chicken neighbors on breeds, and surviving your brutal heat waves....

Have you stopped by our learning center yet? Lots of good articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry....

As for space, you need at least 4 to 5 square feet per bird in the coop and at least 10 square feet per bird out in the run.

So glad you could join our community and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your project, that is a nice surprise. That should be great for 3-4 hens, extra room usually makes for happier hens, and if your family winds up liking chickens as much as people usually do it leaves you room to add another hen or two.

Well to up date this I bought her her new chicks and after 2 weeks had to make a lager brooder for the. Man the grow so fast. they are now double their size from the day we bought them. Here is a shot of them in the new 4x4 box we put them in, they seem to like it as they run all over scratching through the pine shavings.
