I am a new member and as a retired horticulturalist the next step seemed to be to get some chickens. So 3 years ago we bought a small property and got 7 beautiful chicks who have become our pets. Last year we added 2 little silkies. The girls are pretty good layers but mostly we keep them because we love them. We worked hard to build many gardens around the property and then discovered we had to fence them all to keep the chickens from destroying them. They are lucky we love them because they have cost us a lot of money and hard work diggin up my precious plants! :) We have learned a lot over the past few years and are constantly entertained as we watch their antics in the yard. And every time we sit down, we end up with a chicken in our laps.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I also found out the hard way that chickens have very different agendas in the gardening department. I think I got 2 tomatoes the first year when I let them free range. They are now happily contained to their own 1/3 acre of the property but now do wonders for my gardens in the form of fertilization.

:welcome
Hi, guess you found out chickens love to garden too  That's something I learned when my flock made short work of some newly emerging kale.

Make yourself at home here and thanks for joining us!
Thank you. Yes and no one warned me about the holes all over the yard that we have fallen in a couple of times but no broken ankles yet! Lol chickens do love to dig!

So who has their own 1/3 acre, the chickens or the tomatoes? LoL
