Hi,

Chicken noob here! Have done lots of online and book research, talked to friends who have chickens, and have taken the plunge! I ordered 23 chicks from McMurray Hatchery and they are on their way. Setting up the brooder, and will have everything ready for the little peeps when they arrive, hopefully tomorrow morning!

I have learned a lot just from reading a few threads on this forum, and I look forward to getting to know some of you. I know I will be on here a lot to gain info. I just hope I can do a good job with my birds. My animals become family and I know these little ones will be no different.

Thanks for listening!

! Happy you joined our community! Is that a Saluki as avatar? Good luck and enjoy your flock!

Thanks for the warm welcomes! My avatar is actually a greyhound, our Rugger, who we lost to hemangiosarcoma last November. :(

I could hardly sleep last night thinking of my little peeps travelling thru the mail to me.......Prayers for a safe trip for them!

Well my little peeps arrived this a.m.! P.O. called us about 7 and hubby went and picked them up while I did horse chores. Been so excited and nervous all weekend long, and now i can relax! All 24 survived the journey and are doing well. I needed to go get a larger wattage heat lamp as after they settled in I noticed them huddled under the 125 watt lamp. So replaced it with a 250 watter and they now appear more comfortable and spread out in the large metal water trough that I am using to brood them in. Was a little worried when I didn't see them going to the waterer (I dipped all of their beaks in water before letting them loose and watched them drink), and realized it was probably up too high for them--on a couple of think wooden blocks. Removed one of the blocks and they flocked to it. I have them in my heated tack room in the barn and I could just sit out there all day watching them!

We really have a mixed flock--2 white giants, 2 black giants, 2 light brahmas, 2 columbian wyandotte, 2 speckled sussex, 2 new hampshires, 2 turkens, 2 white orpington, 2 silver lace wyandotte, 2 buff rock and 2 partridge rock. And then 1 male araucana. And lastly the one "surprise" straight run exotic chick. This is just too exciting!!!!!

You can see one of the dark turken chicks on the lower right hand side of the picture.
