Hello,
I am working to start my flock this spring. I am currently in the city so I have more restrictions than some of you. I am currently looking for suggestions for breeds that will do well in my area for egg laying purposes. I will also need to find a place to get whatever breed i finally decided on. Thanks in advance for any help.

You can check out our breeds section here on BYC to see what people are saying about the different breeds and how they lay..

Also this link to an external page has lots of info on the different breeds....

I keep Black Australorps, they are of the Orpington breed. All the Orpingtons make great layers. They are also very docile and friendly.

Good luck with your new adventures and enjoy BYC!

Thanks for all the tips and welcomes. I think I am going to look into trying to find some australorps or rhodes island reds near by. I think they will work well for my needs.

Critta, We are neighbors!! I'm in Richmond too, I got my Chicken Permit yesterday and I'm looking to get chicks in March. Lets keep one another posted on Richmond-chicken info!

Do you have your permit yet? When are you looking to get chicks?

Sounds great! You are ahead of me in the process but I hope to catch up soon. I am in the process of trying to design my coop and run. I don't have my permit yet since I need to figure the housing out. Just heard back from zoning on where I am allowed to build it yesterday.

Do you know if they have a deadline this year like they did last year?

If all goes according to plan I will get the structure built and my permit in the next month then I will check out what types of chicks they have at my local SS or if its close to May go to that farm gathering in Ashland i forget the name.

Do you know what type of chicks your trying to get yet?
