I'm a newbie to owning backyard chickens. It's been 5 months now and I've learned some things by trial and reading as much as possible. This site and all members have been so helpful and informative. I think I would be lost without it. :)

hi and welcome

yes, isn't this site amazing

I have 5 chickens. I had 6, a frizzle, which died yesterday by my dog. I do believe it wasn't on purpose because he's never gone after the hens. But, I believe he got overly excited and hurt her. From reading other threads, I agree, you can never trust your dog 100% and they aren't all to blame.
Currently I have 5 hens, an older silken ADOPTED by a friend with the frizzle, and 4 younger hens. One is a california white, a red sex link and 2 Plymouth rocks.

how old is your California white, and what do u think of her? I have a few Cal White chicks about 4 weeks old and these are the first I have had of this breed.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about the chicken you lost, some dogs do "play" chickens to death, they don't understand that chickens aren't squeaky toys.

My california white is 14 weeks old. I had her since she was 2 weeks old. She gets along great with the others. She's less personable than the other hens. I try to pick her up as much as possible. She's very cautious and weary but when I bring out the dried worms she's at my feet like the rest. I read good things about them as far as for laying and good with the rest of the flock.
