Hello! New to chicken raising. We recently got 10 chickens. The Texas heat is a battle. I have a fan blowing into the coop and frozen water bottles.

Welcome to BYC from southwest of Fort Worth! It's been hot in Granbury, too! I think there have only been a couple of days the entire month where the temperature has barely been below 100. It was 111 yesterday and 110 today! My young chickens (10 weeks) have done sort of okay with the heat-- they have been panting, though.

I have a battery-powered mister/fan that I use in the hottest part of the day, from about 2:00 pm until around 8:00. It's a Ryobi brand misting fan from Home Depot, made to be used outside. It uses the same 18-volt batteries that other Ryobi tools use. It fits on top of a 5-gallon bucket (or can use a hose). It runs about 1 amp/hour per hour, so a 4-Ah battery lasts about 4 hours. (It comes with a 1.5 Ah battery.) I switch out the battery (I have several) and add more water to the bucket to get the 6 hours I run it.

I tested it today, and a thermometer directly in front of the mist, 7 feet away, showed a 20-degree drop (It was 85F) when the surrounding temp was 105. I use it blowing across one end of the run, so the young chickens can move away if they prefer. It does get them slightly damp, with tiny droplets on some of their feathers, but they don't seem to mind. Of course, the coop needs to stay in the shade.

Yesterday, my truck showed a temp of 125 on the gravel where it was parked! That was in full sun, though.

Welcome again! The heat is rough, but we'll be missing it next January and February when we have another snowmageddon and temperatures are below zero (F). :)
