Welcome! I'm new as well--Seattle area is my home. Have had chickens for years as our bit of the area is unincorporated. I didn't have chickens for a bit but am getting chicks this week. Can't wait!

Yes! Mine do free-range. I let them out in the morning and put them away in the coop at night. Predators are unpredictable and you may loose a couple hens due to hawks, but they are happiest when they can scratch, peck, and eat bugs. You can also build a nice run for them to get sunshine without being in danger of predators.
