I've been reading along for a few months! We knew we would be getting some chickens when we bought 5 acres last year. I've been searching for an old coop or shed or something to make into a coop when I came upon a young guy looking to rehire his 12 chickens and their coop! I thought I'd ease into chicken life starting with babies but I have five 8 month olds- 2 RIR,2 BR, and what I'm told is an Americauna. Then I have two 6 week olds and five 4 week olds. All the babies are the offspring of the older girls and an Americauna Rooster. So far they're all different looking and super cute! I'm afraid that at least 3 are roos. I have to say I love reading up on everything here! NEveryone is so helpful and generally really respectful. I've been in mommy groups online where people discuss children and it's nothing but bashing and mean! So I'm glad the chicken world seems friendly :) I'm in Wisconsin, I have 5 kids the oldest is 10 and my youngest is a set of 4 month old twins. And I also love to garden!

With 5 acres you could get carried away. :)
I am in WI too and considering upping the amount of acreage we have.

Hi and welcome to BYC. Congrats on your new flock! Chickens, 5 kids and gardening - I bet you have hours to burn just doing nothing eh?

Welcome to Backyard chickens - chicken spoken here 24/7 and you won't get any weird looks from us. We are chicken enablers in every sense of the word. You may want to post photos of your birds at "what breed or gender is this," and hopefully get that squared away. We love to guess here too but, on the gender thread you will be open to many more opinions.
