hello, everyone! I've been looking around BYC for the last few weeks. I'm picking up 10 RIRs and 10 Australorps tomorrow. They are 1 week old, and I can't wait to welcome them to their new accomodations. They will be kept in a 10x10x4 run with a seperate 6x6x4 coop. I plan on keep the coop open-bottomed, and both the coop and run will be moved atleast once a week (over most of a 5 acre farm)
I've planted red clover, alfalfa, and some rye grass. Also, I've got an earthworm community for compost. And, I will plant a few pumpkins and squash in the next few months.
They will be supplemented with feed, grit, & oyster shell.

I haven't determined the best method for making a portable dust bath.

I'm looking forward to managing the flock, but not so much the butchering for meat  though it will probably be tasty in the end.

Sounds like you have a plan.

Are you raising them for duel purposes? Meat & eggs? You will enjoy them! I have 6 RIR and they are pretty dependable layers.

Becareful feeding them the earthworms b/c they can transfer unwanted parasites to your chickens.

Good luck w/ your new flock. We want to see pics!

howdy, everyone!

I didn't get the 10 B.Aust / 10 RIR because I couldn't confirm basic details (vaccinations, background) with the seller, so I ended up putting in my order with McMurray. I have heard of the problems they were having, but I'm assured that they've now taken the proper steps to ensure healthy birds. They are supposed to arrive the week of June 2nd, which makes me sad, but patience is a virtue. In the meantime, I've scheduled to take a tour of Coyote Creek Farm in Elgin, Texas. I'm probably going to raise my flock on their organic feed.

My order : 10 Jumbo Cornish x Rock Males
3 Pearl White Leghorn Females
4 B. Australorps Females
4 Araucanas Females
4 Rhode Island Red Females
1 Rare Freebie (i'm excited!)

I have started to construct a second pen/roost for the J.CxR, though they won't be around much longer than 4 months (from what i understand)
