Hi everyone. We're new to B Y C. We have seven in our family. One adult child and her cat has moved to a new state. One adult child and his dog are planning to move to college this fall. We have one acre in a small town. We live very close to Lake Michigan. We are interested in God, getting out of debt, being self sufficient, growing our own food, and urban mini-farming for added income.
We have one barn cat, two city dogs, three farm raised pups, four ducks, eight laying hens and thirty-six baby chicks.
Our cat is a 'black and white tuxedo' short hair.
One city dog is a long haired chihuahua. She is so smart that she gets to go to college!
One city dog is a bichon frise gone to seed.
Two female pups are coming from a breeder in a smaller town than ours. One male pup is from the big city. These three farm raised pups will be for breeding. They are all boxer/lab mixes.
The ducks are pekins. The two female belong to us. The two male are on vacation from a friend's house. We are trying to find out if they will mate. I've heard conflicting stories on this. We'll let you know.
We have had backyard chickens for a year.
Our laying hens are: four buff orpingtons, one silver spangled hamburg, two Delawares, one barnevelder. They live in a coop we built into the back wall of the barn. They have a permanent run that is 10' by 16'. We also built a chicken pen for them last year so they could enjoy being under our blackberry tree. This year they free range and come when called.
Our baby chicks are white jersey giants and one bonus black chick with feathers on his legs. We started out with an order of forty; forty-two were shipped to us. Two died within the first day. The others died because of 'paisting up.' This was a new problem for us and it took a few days to find the cause and correct it. They are in two watermelon boxes in the garage. They are not a month old yet but the larger ones can fly! They have beautiful wings. We don't know what the bonus rooster is. If anyone has an idea, please let us know.

Welcome to BYC! Sorry about the loss of your chicks. You have a nice variety of chickens. I especially like the Buff Orpingtons for their beautiful feathers and their calm, gentle temperament, and I have a few of them in my flock just for those reasons. They are good layers of large, brown eggs as well. If you post a picture of the bonus rooster, maybe we can identify the breed for you. Good luck with your flock.

Welcome to the flock.  How do your dogs react to the chicks/chickens?
Tha chihuahua killed two last year when they were first put in thier run. We dont let her run free with the flock. She hasnt shown any aggression towards them for a while.
The bichon watched them for a while and seemed to worry they would hurt one of the children. Hes over that now and thinks they are one of the family.
We play with our chickens. The children read to them. We all carry them around. The dogs are adjusted now. We think the chihuahua has too strong of a prey instinct to be trusted alone with them.
The pups are babies and are still with the breeders.
